WHAT IS WELD SPATTER?

Spatter is the creation of droplets of molten material that are generated at or near the welding arc and is a common occurrence in MIG welding.  Spatter is extremely destructive and not often thought of until the welding project is completed and cleanup begins.

WHAT IS THE COST OF WELD SPATTER DAMAGE?

• Damage: Spatter causes damage, cracks or pores, left on the surfaces that it comes in contact with and can instigate corrosion.
• MIG nozzles:  Made basically of copper, with some having ceramic parts.  (The cost of copper, alone, has increased by 40% over the past 10 years).  What was once a consumable or throw-away part, must now be considered in a different economic light.
• Robotics:  A major portion of MIG welding, in industry today, is performed by highly sophisticated and expensive robotics welding equipment requiring protection of critical parts, including expensive tooling and fixtures that insure perfection of alighment during the welding process.
